Samples from the Lake Victoria basin

We acquired samples from the Lake Victoria basins via a collaboration with Ken Irvine and John Simaika of the IHE-Delft for water education, whose students, Leandro Antonio De La Cruz Alvares and Peter Otieno Omollo, conducted fieldwork in the Mara Wetlands. Leandro and Peter are doing their Master theses at IHE-Delft (the Netherlands). Leandro stayed briefly at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences to conduct genetic analysis on those samples and to identify the fish specimens. He performed DNA extractions and DNA barcoding on a selection of the specimens and of environmental samples. We encountered some technical issues but manage to resolve these. Hence, we can present a data base of barcodes of Lake Victoria fish species.
