Fieldwork in the Nyungwe National park
African Parks, the University of Rwanda and CoEB (Center of Excellence in Biodiversity and Natural Resources, Rwanda) co-organized a summer school in Nyungwe National Park, Rwanda. Although not particularly rich in fish species, this mountainous region straddles the border between the drainages of Lake Victoria, Tanganyika, and Kivu. Quite the spot to collect samples! Maarten Van Steenberge and Heleen Maetens joined the summer school as instructors and teamed up with ichthyologists from Rwanda: Philippe Sanzira Munyandamutsa and Theodore Nshimyumuremyi, the DR Congo: Paul Mukungilwa and Uganda: Aventino Kasangaki. This team collected fishes in the park as well as in the surrounding areas. The collections enlarged our knowledge on the fish diversity in the park and provide material for DNA barcoding. The genetic data will help to understand the relationships between the park biodiversity in a broader regional context.
